Mortal Shell 2 Best Shells: Top Picks Ranked

Mortal Shell 2 best shells based on community reports: Tiel, Gragu, Lazlo, Smert, Eredrim, Proxima, Genessa and Sariel — and which one to bond first.

Quick answer

Community discussion consistently rates Tiel (stealth, burst, forgiving recovery) as the safest high-tier pick, with Eredrim as the tank, Lazlo as the defensive anchor, Gragu for exploration sustain, and Smert as the highest ceiling. Take Tiel first — three-Glimpse Shells before four-Glimpse ones, because Glimpses appear finite per playthrough.

Which Shell is strongest right now?

There is no settled answer, and that is the honest starting point. Mortal Shell II shipped on Aug 20, 2026 and the first Balance Patch has already landed, so the meta is still moving. What the community discussion does converge on is a shortlist of five Shells that keep coming up:

ShellWhat players valueSource status
Tiel (also written "Teal")Stealth, burst damage, forgiving recovery. Enhanced dodge. Widely recommended as an early pickup.Community report + walkthrough
GraguExploration sustain, stagger and punch-oriented play.Community report
LazloDamage reduction and regeneration — the defensive pick.Community report
SmertHigh-end, time-stop-flavoured power. Described as a late-game carry.Community report
EredrimTanky Shell, pairs with frost greatsword and counter-focused play.Community report + review
ProximaAvailable immediately alongside Tiel after the prologue.Walkthrough
Genessa, SarielNamed in the confirmed 8-Shell roster; roles not documented by any source we could verify.Unconfirmed

Treat every ranking as opinion, not canonical fact. The tier list circulating in the community comes from a single player at NG++, which is a very different game from a first playthrough.

How to choose your first Shell

Your first Shell is the most consequential decision in the game because Glimpses appear to be finite in a single playthrough. Bonding costs Glimpses, higher bond tiers cost progressively more, and if you sink everything into one Shell and then find another you prefer, you may not be able to max both without a second run.

The practical rule from player walkthroughs:

  • Take Tiel first. He is cheap, close to the starting beacon, and his enhanced dodge forgives the timing mistakes you will make while learning a combat system with no stamina bar to pace you.
  • Buy the three-Glimpse Shells before the four-Glimpse ones. The more expensive Shells tend to sit in the harder half of the world, so you will be fighting above your weight to reach them early.
  • Do not worry about weapons. Any Shell can use any weapon. Picking a Shell does not lock you out of a moveset, only out of a defensive kit and a skill tree.

Skill points are not the scarce resource

Skill points come from levelling the Harbinger with Gloom, are shared across every Shell, and can be refunded at any time. Glimpses are the scarce currency — spend those carefully, experiment freely with skill points.

Matching a Shell to how you like to fight

If you want the safest learning curve: Tiel. The enhanced dodge and the forgiving recovery on his attacks mean mistakes cost less while you learn enemy timing.

If you want to trade hits: Eredrim. He is described as a walking damage sponge and pairs naturally with heavy weapons such as the Great Martyr's Blade, because he can afford to stand in a swing.

If you want to explore aggressively: Gragu. The community values him for sustain and stagger, which matters more in long dungeon runs than in boss arenas.

If you want the highest ceiling: Smert, once you have the game knowledge to exploit a time-stop style ability. New players will not get value from him.

If you want pure defence: Lazlo, for damage reduction and regeneration.

What actually changes when you switch Shells

Three things: your base kit and defensive option, your skill tree, and your synergies. Your weapon does not change, and levelling the Harbinger raises the base stats of all Shells simultaneously, so switching later is never as punishing as it looks — the cost is the Glimpses you already spent bonding.

Shell abilities are also distinct enough to change how fights play. Tiel's Shadowstrike, for example, acts like a short riposte that temporarily staggers enemies, giving you a free opening that a heavier Shell would have to earn through blocking.

Ratings are opinions, not facts

Two things on this page must not be read as measurements:

Tier placements are editorial. "S tier" or "best Shell" is a judgement about a specific player, weapon pairing and skill level. We separate what a Shell does (verifiable) from how good it is (opinion), and we do not publish a ranking we cannot defend.

Our rating and the community rating are different things. Genessa and Sariel are the clearest example: both are confirmed members of the 8-Shell roster, but no source we could verify documents their roles. We list them and stop there rather than inventing a tier for them.

What is not confirmed

The exact stat differences between Shells, the roles of Genessa and Sariel, whether bond level caps differ per Shell, and any official balance targets. All of that is Unconfirmed and likely to shift with the next patch — note that a larger patch is already confirmed to be in testing.
