Is there an agreed Mortal Shell II Shell tier list?
No — and any site presenting one as settled fact is guessing. Mortal Shell II released on Aug 20, 2026, the first Balance Patch has already shipped, and the most detailed community ranking we found comes from a single player at NG++, which describes a completely different game from a fresh first run.
This page explains what the community discussion actually says, why the rankings disagree, and how to read a tier list for this game without wasting Glimpses.
The Shells under discussion
Community tier-list threads consistently name these eight: Tiel, Lazlo, Proxima, Smert, Eredrim, Genessa, Gragu and Sariel. That matches the 8 playable Shells figure on the official publisher page. Note that transcripts and posts spell Tiel as "Teal", so both refer to the same Shell.
The recurring arguments in the "which Shell is strongest right now" discussion:
- Tiel — stealth, burst damage, and forgiving recovery. The most recommended Shell for both new and experienced players.
- Gragu — valued for exploration sustain and stagger/punch play; ranked highly by players who spend most of their time in dungeons rather than boss rooms.
- Lazlo — damage reduction plus regeneration; the defensive anchor pick.
- Smert — described as a high-end, time-stop-style powerhouse. Strong ceiling, high knowledge requirement.
- Eredrim — the tank. Frequently paired with a frost greatsword or counter-focused play.
Genessa and Sariel appear in the same lists but our sources do not detail their strengths, so we will not assign them a tier.
Why tier lists disagree in this game specifically
Three design decisions make Mortal Shell II unusually resistant to a single ranking.
Any weapon works on any Shell. In most character-action games the class and the weapon are one choice. Here they are separate, so a Shell's rank depends heavily on which weapon you put in its hands. Tiel with a heavy two-hander plays nothing like Tiel with the Axe and Dagger.
There is no stamina bar, so defence is posture management. A Shell's value changes depending on whether you rely on the Untarnished Seal's guard, the Vatra Seal's Harden, or the Infinite Seal's parry. A "top tier" Shell for a parry player may be a poor pick for someone who lives on Harden.
Bond levels gate the skill tree. A Shell that looks weak at Bond Level 1 can look completely different once tiers three and four are unlocked — and those tiers are expensive enough that most players never see them in a first run.
A tier list built at NG++ assumes maxed bonds and full system knowledge. If you are on your first playthrough, weight the "forgiving" Shells — Tiel and Eredrim — far above the high-ceiling picks.
What Balance Patch 1 changed
The first balance patch is confirmed to touch economy, bosses and enemies, weapons and Tarstones. That is four of the five systems that decide a Shell's strength, so any pre-patch tier list is already out of date.
The full changelog text has not been reproduced here because we could not verify a verbatim official source. The patch number, size and complete list of Shell-specific changes are Sin confirmar.
How to use a tier list without wasting Glimpses
Glimpses — the currency used to bond with Shells — appear to be finite within a single playthrough. That makes early bonding the one decision you cannot easily reverse.
- Bond cheap, bond one. Take Tiel first; three-Glimpse Shells before four-Glimpse ones.
- Test before investing. Shells can be swapped freely; the sunk cost is the Glimpses, not the Shell.
- Spend skill points freely. They are shared across Shells and refundable at any time, so experimenting with a build costs you nothing.
- Re-read the rankings after every patch. The value of these Shells moves with balance changes more than with player skill.
Verdict
If you need a single answer today: Tiel is the safest high-tier pick, Eredrim is the safest tank, and Smert is the highest ceiling for players who already know the fights. Everything else in the rankings is opinion, and the honest tier position of Genessa and Sariel is Sin confirmar.
